Everyone learns in different ways. However, no matter the different techniques people use for learning, there is always one factor that must be present in order to learn: attention. Without paying attention, one cannot learn. As Apollo Robbins, an expert pickpocket, says in his TED talk, "You can't attend to something if you're not aware of it."Video taken from YouTube.com. In the presentation, Robbins describes how, in order to steal items, he controls the person's attention and forces him/her to spend it elsewhere while he can steal an item in another area. The same principles of attention used in the video also apply to learning. Attention must be present in order to be able to learn. For example, if a teacher is trying to teach, but a student is on his/her phone, that student will not be able to absorb the information and process it carefully because his/her attention was distracted by the phone. In order, to absorb information and learn, full attention must be paid. This then brings me to the topic of multitasking. I believe multitasking is pure myth. In order to do accurately complete two different tasks at the same time, attention has to be split; however, attention cannot be fully split. The only instance in which multitasking could work is if one of the tasks being done is considered second nature to that individual. If a task is considered second nature to someone, then not much attention needs to be spent on that task because that individual has done it so many times, the muscle memory for that task has been fully developed. Then, more attention can be used on the task that is not considered second nature. Overall, learning can only take place if full attention is being put towards learning. Distractions that veer your attention disable your brain to take in the information. If full attention is not put towards a task, then it cannot fully be completed. What are your thoughts on how attention relates to learning?
